Against misuse of organs, Health decided to concentrate transplants

The Ministry of Health informed this Wednesday in note, which determined the concentration of all liver transplants in the State of Rio de Bonsucesso General Hospital in the (northern zone of Rio). The system was modified after an operation of PF (Federal Police) have revealed the suspicion that a gang diverted bodies in the State.

As the investigations of PF, the former head of the hospital’s liver transplant UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) and former coordinator of Rio Transplantation, Joaquim Ribeiro Filho, diverted livers that should go for patients in top of the list of donations and intended to people who paid between $ 200 thousand and $ 250 thousand. These irregular transplants were performed in clinical Saint Vincent, in Gávea (southern Rio).

In the note, the Ministry of Health also reported that the director of Care, Alberto Beltrame, comes to Rio tomorrow (30) to implement the new measure - the focus of the transplant - and that investigations started from the PF denunciation of Central State of Rio de Transplantation, which shows “that the National System of Transplantation is vigilant and ready to suppress and combat any attempt at fraud.”

In 2007, the SUS (Single Health System) held 15,857 transplants of organs, and 971 of them from liver.

The Other Side

In this Wednesday afternoon, the clinic St. Vincent, - where, according to PF, occurred irregular transplants - released a memo in which denies involvement with the case. “The clinical Saint Vincent only part of the process offering their facilities hospital when requested by medical teams accredited to the national system for transplants. Dr. Joaquim Ribeiro never led team of doctors from the clinic,” the note says.

The superintendent of PF in Rio, Valdinho Caetano, confirmed that investigations have not found any irregularity on the part of the clinic, which is the only unit of private health accredited to the National System of Transplantation.

The IRIN still not find the lawyers reported.
