How many Brazils do you know?

Brazil :

Some time ago I wrote about the social apartheid in Brazil, a term that is used to refer to the social inequality in Brazilian cities. Houses of USD 1 million in a side street and in the other slums. Beaches for the poor and beaches for the rich. Better quality of public education for the rich and bad private education for the poor(this issue is so complex that later I’ll write some articles about it).

Finally, Brazil is considered a country that is not typical of Third World (or “developing”, euphemism created by rich countries), but due to large inequalities can not be considered “developed”.

Middle class district in Sao Paulo

However, one element that can be identified as causes of inequality in major cities are regional differences, specifically the difference between north and south and that is why there is “two Brazils”; part of the country with a dynamic economy and high human development index, the other with a completely underdeveloped country. To illustrate the situation well, just see the difference between the HDI of states: the South and Southeast regions have the one hundred more developed municipalities, while the North and Northeast regions have the hundred less developed municipalities.

40 million people live like that in Brazil

If you could come to Brazil to travel by car, you actually could witness this fact, because when you stay away from Sao Paulo state poverty increases gradually and is visible, very visible. The number of slums grows and there are cities in which 70% of population lives without piped water, sanitation, electricity, hospitals, schools and jobs. If in the South and Southeast regions the middle class predominates, in others it is the exception.

Campinas - largest city in “Sao Paulo country side”

In a way I can say that I am lucky. The area where I live is one of the richest regions of the country, highly industrialized and with a high rate of development. Here in Sao Paulo state there are 10 regions with specific characteristics and the government strives to develop each one according to their potential, such as the establishment of technology centers to increase the value of industries and services. One of the most successful examples is the production of ethanol that is being enhanced for 3 decades.

And that is precisely why many call this state of “Republic of Sao Paulo”, although that term could also be used offensively, as Sao Paulo was not part of Brazil, as the Paulistas (people born in Sao Paulo ) were not Brazilians. And, unfortunately, it only encourages the nazi movement, which already I wrote about before.

Children working, a sad reality

However, the economic growth of recent years began to change this scenario, because the poorest regions are finally getting resources and investments so that they can develop properly. Of course, it will take a long time to the social differences between regions become “acceptable”, maybe about 40 years, but the country needs a constant effort for this to become reality. But if not, this division will continue and may increase further, which will inevitably result in a conflict.

Celso, this has to be one of the most realistic articles you have written. The pictures I have seen so far have always been the beautiful cities, either modern or colonial. India is quite similar to the Brazilian situation.

The cities of Bombay and Delhi generate more money than the entire nation could. And there is Bangalore, whose only reason for success is foreign ’silicon’ investment. Once you move away from these cities, the poverty and squalor can be staggering.

And yes, developing country is a euphemism for a third world country.
In fact, you can witness unimaginable poverty right in the middle of these cities. The reason we call a country developing is because of the economic disparities. With so many millions of poor in Brazil, it definitely is a developing country.

Thank you, Jaiyant.

The reality in our countries really sucks! Big time! I know you follow my articles for awhile now and you know how hard is to try to introduce a entire country for people who only read about beaches and carnaval.

Big problems cannot be demonstrated in only 4 or 5 articles.

Celso, people don’t want to read the darker side of a nation. People don’t want others to read about the darker side of their nations. But only when our dirt comes will there be an oppotunity for change. Talking about yoga, meditation, ayurveda, spirituality, software, silicon valley (India) and talking about Samba, beautiful people, beaches, parties, Carnival, historic buildings, beautiful countryside would not do justice to either the country being written about nor to the reader who gets a wrong impression about the country. When one writes about something, it is very important to juxtapose it with the harsher reality.. Otherwise it becomes tourism/investor friendly propaganda.

Hehehehe. That’s true! And, as I don’t work for any tourism agency and department, I’ll not talk about Brazilian beaches and bitches as that were the only things here.

The same is valid to you, with your gurus and palaces, we know reality is way more complex than that!

The gurus and the palaces represent a decadence, a spiritual and material decadence which stay immune to the suffering around them. people just don’t want to see the filth around the. The feel good factor is all they want!

”Hunger is psychological, thirst too”, how many times we come across with this BS talk. If things were like that, the world would be almost perfect!

Open our eyes to see the dirt, and then realise that the shit is all around us is necessary, otherwise, we can turn ourselves walking crap, and not humans at all.

A person’s distress is always claimed to be psychological. and if it had to be psychological, it has to be non-existing! So, the well-fed and the smug find it easy to say hunger is psychological because they have the material ability to satiate their hunger. How I wish people knew psychological suffering is tangible and real. Hunger is moreover physiological.

Suffering is an essential part of humans (I learn that as soon I arrived in this planet 400 years ago).

But the way humans deal with it is completely different. Some face the pain, but that is rare.

It is funny, because humans develop these defense mechanisms to fight this pain and anxiety inherent in all of us. Some of the defense mechanisms are denial. Denial of poverty for instance. Religion is another defense mechanism. An undoing in fact

what’s gone wrong in Brazil? they are one of the richest countries in the world in terms of natural resources, larger than India and 1/5 th of our population........anyways I wanted to know is it safe for women to travel alone in Brazilian cities? do u guys really easily get drugs?

What Brazil is today is a sum of various factors, from colonialism to American influence. Each one of these elements contribute somehow to mess things around here.

But answering you r questions: yes, it is safe to women walk in the cities most of the time(of course that walk into a slum is dangerous); and drugs can easily be found here too, especially cocaine, because of some countries that produce this drug in South America.

At last now I can access insta...

Once again, congratulations for this post, Celso!
You might call me sadist but I think best part of developing nations is their social diversity...there is daily struggle, there is suffering, there are stark differences, there is cold rich heaven and fury of hell...many Brazils in within one Brazil...if only there was no discrimination, no apartheid...

What don’t kill us, make us stronger? Yes, this a reality here. All beasts have to survive somehow, haven’t they?

Anyway, it’s good that differences exist, but the social and economic differences are too big here. Maybe in 50 years this change, but only if Brazil start to change today.

Developing countries are a microcosm of the human society aren’t they?

More than a microcosm, the exception in the world is the rich countries.

Seriously Celso..The more you show me through your writings and photos, the more I think our contries are siblings, seperated at birth, but still tracked by the evil ”Papi” The only difference...your Papi at least realised he can stay load his pockets, even with privitization which has allowed Brazil to begin the slow descent to some type of recovery...Ours just keeps pushing us closer and closer to hell.

Oscar, mostly of the problems our countries face we know very well whom should be blamed. For centuries our ”colonies”, then Imperialists countries and nowadays the big bro from the north.

Can I ask you something, could Mexico try to decrease the American influence?
