The American elections are probably the “theme of the year”. The world and especially the Americans are accompanying this major political fact which, without the slightest shadow of doubt, will bring some sort of change in the lives of people around the world in some way (that is a consequence of globalisation).
Therefore, it is difficult not to have an opinion about it. Who is the best candidate? Who is better prepared? What is the best proposal? What is the ideology of each candidate? Questions like these (and others) become increasingly relevant and more frequent in the most different types of social relations in the most diverse places in the world. However, to get an opinion on a subject as complex is not something simple. I think everybody should look for different informations in all places possible, no matter if it’s a weekly magazine, or a PHD in political science. Debates are needed so that theories and assumptions can be proven or discarded.
To be honest, I have not yet arrived at a satisfactory conclusion on Mccain or Obama, because I have more doubts than certainties for on each of them, especially on Obama.
Define what are the characteristics of a populist leader is not easy, because, historically, there were populist leaders from both “sides”, left or right. And the populism is not exclusive to developing countries, just look for Italy now to see what I am talking about it. But the populist leaders always appear in times of crisis, in which it is easy to sell hope to those who are dissatisfied with the direction of the economy and the political class in a particular country.

Charisma and capacity to mobilise the masses are basic characteristics of a populist. And Obama is following this dangerous path. His promises are exactly what the majority of Americans want to hear. The hope of which speaks is the desire for change that millions of Americans want.
There is something wrong in giving hope? Of course not. But saying things that the others want to hear is not telling the truth. It is manipulation. And populist politicians always cause more damages than benefits to the societies.
Therefore, can you help me to take off this doubt? Is Obama a populist?
Maybe last century, you can scare people by mentioning socialism. Not this 21st century. The word is not as dirty as it used to sound.
Apparently, the emergence of Obama is considered such a threat that the right wing does not think that L-word (liberal) can do the job anymore so you guys dug deeper into your fear-mongering bag to pick up socialist.
To suggest that an individual will ruin America is an insult to Americans. It is a demeaning of the American democracy. It is a dismissal of the core principle of the government of the people. It is like saying that the American democracy has no foundation and can easily be wiped away by an ordinary mortal like Obama.
I can tell you that Chairman Mao or even Putin as American president cannot ruin America. If America survived the crook, Nixon, it can survive anyone.
Don’t believe all you hear on right wing radio.
Why sensible people suddenly are scared of this skinny black man with big ears is beyond me.
What did Obama do to your confidence, John? What did he do to your confidence in the great American institutions?
Do you really think that he can get into the White House and destroy the Republic while the CIA, SSS, NSA, SCH, MI, MI3, CCY, PUL, UTR and all the other secret services and spy agencies watch?
Please! Stop it, man.
Not even Bush and Cheney could fool everybody every time. And they had most of the institutions in their pocket.
With the Democrats in the congress just waiting for their chance, the USA has a huge problem with the most liberal of all US presidential candidates EVER potentially taking office.
Alone, he can do very, very little to change things. Sadly, he would not be alone... Instead there would be the largets group of ’do nothings’ together for a grand old tax and spend party.
Please, search ”Global Poverty Act” and see how scary this bill is and it simply awaiting the next president’s signature... Obama co-authored this anti-American bill which desolves much of the Bill of Rights from Article One on down...
This is serious, my friend.
Read between the lines and you will comprehend the enormity of the damage it would cause to the freedoms of the American people.
Same here...
If the anti-poverty bill is so bad, it will not pass Congress. If it does, it means that majority of elected representatives supported it. If they support it and it turns out to be wrong, they will be voted out the same way the Republicans who led the Contract With America facade out of office and into infamy.
We are getting the impression that it is so person-centric. Obama and McCain are nothing without their respective party politics.
Looks like Obama’s and McCain’s undoing is their respective bad rep, which, in turn, comes from their respective bad hype.
This is more a statement of American press and the general climate and flavor of party PR.
Of course, of course, propaganda is at its busiest during election campaign periods.
I commiserate with Obama and McCain for being fodder to the PR mill. Hazards of the trade!
