Kisses and paranoia
Augusto dos Anjos

The poem below was written by Augusto dos Anjos at the end of the nineteenth century. His literary work until the decade of 30 was used by medicine schools, because the language of the poet, as you’ll see later, is rich in biological and chemical elements.

His metaphors and synesthetic give a tone “rotten” in his poetry. In one of them, describes the body of one of his sons who was born and died soon after. Read some of his poetry is like walking by a cemetery or a morgue where the dead is alive and the living are killing each other.

His pessimistic view of reality combined with a scientific language, have caused amazement and horror into Brazilian society at that time (1890) and only after 50 years after died he was recognized as it should.

In “Intimate Verses,” considered by many a kind of summary of his literary work, Augusto dos Anjos attacks the hypocrisy of the Brazilian society of that time. But not only that, because he believed that all mankind acted like that, kidding each other: who smiles at you friendly is the same that will try to destroy you later.

Kisses and paranoia

I must confess that his work had and still has a very big impact on me, although I am not paranoid like him. But the fact is that every day, humanity has been shown as the portrait of the decay of a species, something that devours itself in the search for more immediate and futile pleasures (consumerism is an example).

Anyway, when you’re kissing someone else, remember this poetry and try not to vomit.

Intimate Verses

You see? Nobody witnessed the tremendous
Burial of your last chimera.
Only the ingratitude - the panther —
It was your comrade!

You get used to you the mud that you wait!
The man, who, in this miserable land,
Lives among beasts, feels inevitable
Also need to be beast.

Take a match. Lights your cigarette!
The kiss, friend, is the eve of sputum,
The pat hand that is the same as stoning.

If someone to your question still penalty wound,
Stone vile hand that cherishes you,
Sputum that mouth kiss you!

I believe that. To live among beasts, one needs to be a beast.

I see that in the slum areas where I’ve done development work. There is no place and space in those hellish holes for anyone who isn’t a beast yet.

If ever there are, they’re called NGOs. LOL

NGOs are an attempt to settle down the underground beasts that can be a turn into a threat for the rich beasts.

Uh-oh...

LOL

NGOs are rich beasts themselves!

But they do their share to help others. Some, if not most, have been truly effective in alleviating the plight of people.

They are trying to cure cancer using aspirins! It’s a stopgap measure, some are serious, others are nothing but bad intentions disguesed as ”oh, look at you poor thing”!

The idea of an NGO is always noble but it is the people that work for an NGO that makes it a hellish organization. I have seen NGOs here that live off aid from the west

Mankind always has been doing. Smile and stab you in the back. Though not necessarily paranoia, one must always take caution before trusting anything or anyone. Humans have always survived at the cost of others of the same species. Consumerism, as you say, and also even something basic as a career. The one who has to climb the step has to push the ones below him down. Sad, but that’s what people do.. In fact this can be applied anywhere

Humans are predators, no matter what! We like to prefer that we are ”civilised”, but that is just BS!

We are too! Every action of ours is predatory in nature. Take for example human sexuality! it is predatory, but then the instinct reminds us that we are animals, and hence, the system of marriage, laws against promiscuity etc come in.

Hi Grace, I feel u failed to grasp the idea. Its not the question of slum areas or an affluent society. I dunno if its just me, but Augusto dos Anjos was a magician who had a mirror that showed him the evolution of mankind, albeit in a fast forward mode.

So you see, its the fast decaying human society, irrespective of their social status, that he visualized at his free will - and almost to a perfection!

Correct me if I’m wrong, and thank me if my words gave you the right message.

And Celso, sorry for being late to enter your zone buddy :)

LOL! Buddy zone was funny! But you are right when you say that Augusto dos Anjos ”saw the future”, because he is an universal poet that used his own suffering as a pattern for mankind.

Thanks!

Celso, the reality is distorted. For me reality is something that is beyond our comprehension. We will never know the bigger scheme of things. Hence, people are like confused beasts, biting each others’ ears off

After all, we are just humans. It’s impossible to understand all what is happening all the time, our brain would explode!

Therefore, we have to try to control some things that actually can be controlled!

Celso,
Thank you for introducing me to another literary figure. Poets always have tried to hold their own mirror to reflect the rot in the human society. There has to be an angst and pain to be a strong poet. Most of this angst and pain come from deep disappointments and painful personal experiences but they do show a great universality. We all are beasts with some variations here and there...

Darwin gave his theory about natural selection and evolution -’Survival of the fittest’. This can also mean only beasts and ’predators’ can survive in this world!

Sorry for coming in late, I am busy battling some local beasts...
