Marks of a Renaissance

I know very well that we are undergoing a financial crisis. Some countries are suffering more, others less, but in any event, is a pessimistic time. That’s exactly why I decided to describe about something completely different, something that is the symbol of the rebirth of hope in one of the cities that once was one of the most violent in the world.

Four years ago, the then mayor of Sao Paulo decided to create an event called “Virada Cultural” (Virada literally means turned) in which over 24 hours in a weekend of April there were presentations of all types of art completely free to the paulistano public (person who is born in Sao Paulo city).

Marks of a Renaissance

The event was a success. And this year attracted 4 million people to attend presentations of the 800 bands, singers, performances, presentations of outdoor theater, etc. Shows of samba, rap, heavy metal, punk, MPB, all in “Old Center” in Sao Paulo during the early hours in an atmosphere of harmony and fun.

The center of Sao Paulo is called “Old Center” because it is where the city was founded in 1554 and this region is different from the others, because it seems to be very European city with a likely influence of Italian, Portuguese and Spanish who came in beginning of this century.

Marks of a Renaissance

But back to the point, of course, some incidents occurred, as some drunk who ended up fighting with each other, but because of the large number of police who were present, only isolated incidents occurred.

Sao Paulo is the financial center of Brazil, also is the cultural capital of the country, with about 80 museums. Moreover, it is the city that has the most heterogeneous population of the country, about 5 million migrants.

Marks of a Renaissance

All this financial, people and culture wealth, is what allows the city to hold an event of such proportions. An event that symbolizes the rebirth of a city that just over 10 years ago was abandoned, completely decadent.

As I said in other articles, it was necessary to the civil society to make things change. The politicians understood the message and then met the wishes of society. I will not say it was easy, or that what happened was an example that should be followed worldwide.

Marks of a Renaissance

What I am saying is: people have more power than think, especially if mobilized. Is there a greater example than the “Virada Cultural?

Virada Cultural definitely is a place I want to be. It must be the most vibrant of all fairs I ever heard of. This also is made possible because of the cosmopolitan nature of Sao paulo

Indeed! This Virada Cultural is the most important event in Sao Paulo, not only because of the number of people that participates, but because it shows how the government can ”repay” to the citizens.

Come to think of it, Brazilian government has not been really bad. In fact after the tumultuous period during dictatorship, the country has moved so ahead. Its still unbelievable

Very slowly things are changing in Brazil. But in places like Sao Paulo (because of all money), things change faster and for better.

Celso, that is because Sao Paulo is the showcase city of Brazil. It has to be all shiny and glittery! That is the place which attracts a number of investors too..

Indeed! But there are many people who still think Brazil’s most important city is Rio, which is not true.

Well, Rio is famous because of it’s urban beaches, the statue of Jesus and of course the carnival. I wonder why the government and other organizations are pushing Rio but not Sao Paulo

Rio is the prettiest city. That’s why! Sao Paulo is seen as at ”another” part of Brazil, like it don’t belong to the rest of the country.

You have a really nice story telling approach, it was a touching story, and I love that it was true.

Thank you very much!

I think in times like this a nice and truly story can bring some hope. After all, there is always tomorrow!

It’s not wealth that is sustainably the proof of rebirth. Those who think that end up with financial meltdowns! LOL

I only know one thing: The Golden Age came after the Dark Ages. Enough said.

You’re absolutely right, my apocalyptic friend!

What changes this city was a total decadence, which made all society fight for a new ”city”. A fight for a new place to live.

You know, you’re mope than welcome here, as all our friends from IB!

Your country is amazing and your people are great. I met four Brazilians this past summer at a conference in New York. They quickly became some of my best friends. Cheers.

This is a fortunate post!

why?

fortunate because a culutural extravaganza spanning 24 hours was hosted in your state BY the state!

I only wish, ”wish” of something like that down here!

Am I asking for too much???

Yes, I guess so!

Hi Shahwar K!

Thank you for having like the post. But the thing is this kind of event is not so expensive. I guess, you are not asking too much!

Sao Paolo looks like a very beautiful city, Celso, and the buildings remind me too of Spain and Italy with a little bit of fifties-style New York (third photo down) thrown in for good measure. The result is unique.

I am so pleased for the people of Sao Paolo who, as you say, are having a rough time of it for the moment....This must have been good for the morale of everyone.

”Heavy Metal in the ”Old Centre”. Musta bin great!!!!!

Thank you Michael!

Sao Paolo, as any other city with 20 million people, has a lot of problems! But good things happen too. This event, which put together 4 million people is one example.

God I hopw we can follow suit!!! We are finally makes our voices heard, the government IS reacting somewhat, but we’ve got a long time to go..I hope we make it.

And you know what Oscar? This is an excellent thing to elevate the self stem of the people!

It’s a 24 hour party in which all kinds of people can celebrate with each other.

You can actually feel like a ”citizen” and only one more in the middle of a giant place.

Interesting piece of information about Sao Paolo Celso,I had never heard of this festival earlier. You don’t need to explain the number of people, your pictures express it all.

I would have loved to visit any video if you have attached something like that here, with this beautiful post!
