The Growth of Neo Nazi Movement in Brazil

Despite Brazil is a country where nearly half the population is black and mulatto, this population is not equally distributed on the different regions.

In South Central region, in which there are millions of descendants of Europeans, the white population exceeds other races.

So far so good, but the problem begins with the emergence of neo-Nazi movement that began in the 80 and that now gives strong signs of life. It’s common to see them in cities like Sao Paulo at night in certain neighborhoods. Earlier this same city, a police officer was beaten by one of these groups. Cases of homosexuals and blacks were sent to hospitals with serious injuries are also becoming common. In Campinas, a city with more than one million inhabitants, a few years ago, a bomb was detonated in front of a synagogue.

These groups are now spreading in medium cities, especially where the population is descended from European majority. However, the worst is that it seems that the authorities are not giving due attention to this dangerous fact.

We sincerely hope that with this brutal attack on a police officer who was almost killed, authorities time to react to investigate the formation of such groups. One observation: for a long time in Brazil there is a desire separatist in a small plot of the population of South Central region of the country. Could it be this movement an aggressive manifestation of that desire?

What exactly is a Neo-Nazi Movement?

It’s a violent group of white supremacists who attacks people with different colour of the skin, homosexuals, immigrants. They are inspired on Hitler.

You said it began in the 1980s. It sounds like a street gang of deranged drug-addled individuals to me. They must have broken laws by which they can be held against. Why have they persisted? Do you think they’re cashing on an image or an urban legend?

In some parts of the world, bandits hide under the cloak of being so-called terrorists, but they are nothing but bandits.

Don’t you think this is just a street gang hiding behind a terroristic image?

They have a lifestyle that does not allow them to use drugs. They are health, middle classes members and white supremacists. They are not a normal group of bandits. Literally, they venerate Hitler. But you’re right, they are terrorists. What scared me is the fact that this guys are starting to act in small cities too, organizing themselves, what indicates that the movement is growing. Thanks.

Strange to see this in such a country of mixed ethnicity. Or is simply economic problems leading to social disarray?

Anyway I think the crime rate is high in poor suburbs. Is it as bad as they showed in ”Cidade de deus” ?...

In São Paulo the violence has decreased more than 50%, but still is a violent city. The city is so big (20 million people): there are places where violence is almost zero, but in others, the violence is still high.
On the other hand, Rio it’s just chaotic city (6 million people), but the violence is everywhere, like Cidade de Deus (for more information, I suggest to you to watch Tropa de Elite, another brazilian movie, that shows how the police is training to kill (The police on Rio kills hundreds by year). Thanks.

The problem of fascism starts from the seeds of economic hardship. The world is growing at a such a pace that nobody feels himself to be contended and wants more. The societies are breaking, the relationships are losing meaning and ambition is a word which is insatiable.

In all this growing violence in a country which is getting touched by riches and globalization is nothing new. But the problem is knee-jerk response of the government. Lula's government has done a lot but still the disparity is shocking. Brazil is owned by almost 10percent people who don't wish to know how are others.

A lot has to be achieved by the government, and time is very little before situation goes out of hand.

I totally agree with you. The government spend US$ 199 billion by year just to pay
interests on foreign debt, meanwhile spend just US$ 30 billion in Education and Health. Like this, the situation is going to get worse. Bye.

Nazism seems like a virus that is difficult to stamp out. It keeps popping up in different places now and again.

It is more than sixty years since the defeat of Nazism in Germany, but Hitler has left behind a legacy that refuses to die.

That’s a sad fact...

I wonders why did neo-Nazism sprout in Brazil? One would think that in a multi-cultural nation like Brazil there would be better tolerance and amity amongst different communities. Brazilians have been living together for centuries.

I am sure the Nazis must be very few in number.

Brazil was originally colonized by the Portuguese. But at the beginning of the twentieth century, million new immigrants arrived: Japanese, German, Spanish, Arabic and Italian. The absolute majority of those established itself in South Central region of the country.
It was created a kind of division within the country between the Northeast and the South Centre, the first region has grown economically while the second remained stagnant. There was even a separatist attempt at the 30’s that failed, but so far there is resentment among those regions. The preconception is very strong in the South Centre region against ”nordestinos”, but the opposite also exists. And you are right, the number of neo-nazis is small, but if nothing be done, perhaps keeps growing.

Sorry, I have made a mistake, let me correct it: The South Central region is the one that grown economically.

Thanks. You have given a very concise and illustrative account of the roots of the neo-Nazi problem in Brazil.

In India too, there are growing strains (very small though) between the richer states and the backwaqrd states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Recently Gujarat (which is a prosperous state) chief minister wrote to the central government suggesting they needed no central grants, but the state would pay no taxes to New Delhi. He also resented the fact that Gujarat contributes a huge amount to the national exchequer but gets little back.

These are complex issues. But luckily in India the freedom struggle against British rule had thrown up leaders from every state in the country. This act as a strong binding force.
