So what we now have is non-functional government in the face of a major crisis, because Congress includes a quorum of crazies and nobody trusts the White House an inch.
As a friend said last night, we’ve become a banana republic with nukes.

September 26, Paul Krugman.

US: the new Banana Republic

In recent months I have followed this crisis in American financial market with great interest. And I must admit I am surprised with such incompetence!

A year ago the problems in the U.S. Real state market began to gain prominence in leading newspapers because of bad debts of debtors who failed to pay its debts (I love alliteration). Much has been said then that it could become a much bigger problem, because the mortgage companies attracted funds and investment banks, all hand in hand in search of a bigger profit.

As time marches on, things got worse and I could not understand why the government does not intervene. It seemed irrational leave everything in the hands of the “market”. As if all problems could be solved magically.

Well, the time has passed and now the situation is worse than ever. The U.S. government must intervene to save the big banks that succumbed due to their own greed; they are going down because in 2005 and 2006 they did what shouldn’t have done. And now the most capitalist country in the world has to resort to socialists methods. This is absurdly ironic and awful: do not share the profits, but the losses should be socialized?

US: the new Banana Republic

Here in Brazil we are accustomed to such crises. In the late 90’s there were crises in Malaysia, Turkey, Russia, Mexico and South Korea; since then, the Brazilian government developed a plan to prevent such financial crises from reaching the Brazilian economy.

First, the government must always have a surplus of more than 4% a year. Second, the international reserves which stood at USD 40 billion, are now USD 210 billion. Third, the government (through the Central Bank) intervenes heavily in the economy, to prevent such crises from happening again.

For decades we heard from the U.S. and the IMF what we should do, as if they had the all solutions for all problems. Now, the U.S. seems a dog running after it own tail! And to complicate, the parliamentarians did not come into agreement. I think Paul Krugman is right in saying that the United States is becoming the largest republic of bananas on the planet!

Seriously, those economies that aren’t tied to the US too much are the ones not affected by this US financial crisis.

But that was really a surprising turn of events.

That sent the Bush administration to shock. McCain should be careful with his heart.

Brazil chose to put its foreign reserves somewhere else? Where?

No. The foreign reserves are controlled by Central Bank.

I doubt the U.S. will ever be a banana republic. They are too crafty to let something like that happen to themselves.. They know how to turn a crisis into an opportunity..
3 Stars
You probably right, but it will take a few years for US recover, then now it’s an opportunity for some countries to get ready of American influence.

U.S. will recover, in fact it does not need to ’recover’ per se. All they need is the gas fields of Georgia. And there are enough warring countries that buy american weapons. And there are countries like India and Pakistan who would give away anything to get some American weapons. See? There is a lot of demand for Brand America.

The sad part is that the countries that go down with the US on this will also need to suffer for quite a while.

Yes, many countries that are inextricably entangled with the financial situation of the u.S. will find it more difficult to cope up with their crisis than the U.S. itself. Imagine the consequences when the aid stops trickling.

I don’t know what is happening in the us really. i have been away and i get my news mostly in spanish but it has me scared. i tried to open a bank acount when i was living in brazil (next to impossible, i had about a $1000 in cash and they still wouldn’t do it) and was denied. if i had it, i would take the little money that i had and buy reals because it can’t be a bright future for the dollar.
it is sad and scary time for me. all i know and depend on seems to be falling apart.
3 Stars
Casey, the fact is that I am scared too because that crisis it’s only starting.

What I really don’t understand is why the US government allowed it to happen. It’s been one year since that crisis became evident.

Let’s hope US and European countries be able to solve the situation.

Of course the banks were wisa, and the rest of us are finding out now. What is the US dollar? Paper money of course -and not even printed by the US government at that.More over it isn’t backed by any gold or such thing!

All it had going for it was the Bretton Woods agreement when as the victor the US forced the us dollar on all nations as a exchange measure for all currencies.

And all that stood behind it was the might and prestige of the US government. Now that no one trusts that gocernment;the dollar should actually not even be worth the paper it is printed on.

Oh stop blaming the U.S. you are nothing but an anti-gringo American haterer (thought I’d use some Bush speech)...Leave those poor people alone, you know it was all our fault..Damn Mexicans, ya se chingo todo, what the hell where they doing thinking they could buy a house being offered and financed in the States..The worst kind are those third generation dirty Mexicans..They think just because their grandparents, parents and they were born in the U.S., they have a right to buy a house after paying all their taxes..Now look, they’ve gone and screwed up the entire economy of the U.S. of A...Gonna take ALOT of bean sales to pay back that debt.

I feel for the people as economic crisis is devestating.. Millions lost their homes, businesses and the shirts of their backs in 1995 here in Mexico, but pointing fingers anywhere you can, is not justifiable..There comes a time, when even ”great nations” must look in the mirror and realize the error of their ways.
3 Stars
It’s not that simple, Oscar. When those 5 crisis stroke Brazil and Mexico too, we had to listen all that crap from US and IMF.

Brazil was forced to made a high adjustment on government spends, meaning that Public Health Care and Education became even worse here because there weren’t no money at the time.

So, 6 years later, the situation reversed. US government was irresponsible and let this crisis happened.

And now, all the world will pay for that because all financial markets are going down.

Oh hell no, it’s not simple at all..They’ve got us all tied into a sinking ship...Imagine that, Mexico has never recovered from the crisis in 95, now we are going to be tanked, along with the rest of the world..Even if the ”world chipped in” to ease their irresponsible burden and crisis enough for them to stay afloat, in doing so it will drown the rest of the globe..
Now it’s not just housing collapses, it’s student loans, car loans, etc..

Hi buddy,

Have you ever got a banana up your chute? I guess not. Now lemme define "Banana Republic" in my own terms.

Ask Lula how many times he got stuffed by a Costa Rican banana. I am sure Brazil loves bananas, right. Now tell me which side you want it to be bent? Straight forward, right upwards, northeastwards, southwestwards or...

I am not crying, I am just in a state where I can find an example in the annals of the history of the Americas when an emancipated slave-turned-beggar like you had any say. Ungrateful Brazil and even more ungrateful its descended sons from the slaves like this half breed Celso guy who would not have been born if my great grandpa didn't renunciate the whip. Sorry for the language, but a citizen that survives rimming Uncle Sam has the audacity to call the greatest nation on earth a "Banana Republic".
