Very thought inspiring article Celso.. How I wish everyone saw what America is really all about.. Sucking other nations natural resources by luring them with internal and external security. This luring can happen in any way. What scares me is that any of the two possible governments can cause more damage than Bush administration has caused. I feel saddened that South America has already turned into a virtual battlefield with Russia deploying nuclear warheads and submarines off Venezuela, and Chavez expelling the U.S. ambassador. Future doesn’t look too bright for anyone.

And you are right. Somehow South America has became again a virtual battlefield with Russia and US.

This is a crucial time for Brazil to play its cards right (read: BRIC). The US still has a good stronghold in South America.

(It will matter a lot with who between McCain and Obama wins.)

Now is the time for Brazil to have decisive leaders. And to keep the ethanol within.

You might like a lot about the US but I still have a crush on Medvedev, sorry.

Hehehehe. I would love to love more things about Russia. I love Tolstói, Tchekhov, Dostoiévski, but that’s it, I have no access to other things. And about this Georgia conflict, as far as I see, Russia was right.

But you are right, it’s time to Brazil stand up and act like is suposed to be. And, slowly, is giving the right and first steps.

Well, it was probably a wrong move of the US to allow the banana republics to be such, and just backed Pinochet for 17 years.

But then, of course, the US was busy somewhere else during that time... hehe..

But Brazil is going at it very slowly. Its politicians are making the growth slow. Brazil has a huge potential, really. And it’s amazing how Sao Paolo is transforming.

Things may change in the next 2 years.

The main candidate of the opposition is the current governor of Sao Paulo. Although it is less ”leftist” that Lula, he worries the rich countries because supports a stronger Brazil and more independent (he was the minister of Health that some years ago broke the patents on medicines for the treatment of AIDS and this caused a reaction very strong in the United States).

congrats for this thought provoking post!

I often wonder why American citizens are not becoming vocal against America’s military strategies? They don’t want another 9/11, fine, they can ask for better intelligence and internal security. Their money is funding such huge military operations and that too with no end in sight.

They can repeat anti-war movement and protests, like they did after Vietnam war.

Yes, South America is showing unity and lot of character but if it does end up as a battlefield then economically the whole region will become weak and vulnerable...

It is about time the United States review their strategies, because, otherwise, may become target of new terrorist attacks and worse.

Regarding the Russian presence here, this is more a delirium of Hugo Chávez, just that, although the Russians are taking very well the opportunity to demonstrate their strength.

Celso, excellent post, as usual.. It is true America seems to be everywhere to lend a democratic helping hand to everyone and anyone in need...if they have a resource to pay.

That is my concern with the Merida Initiative.

I enter many blog sites regarding illegal immigration and drugs in the United States. I try to make people aware that it is not on Mexico’s fault and to make them open their eyes to the truth. For the first time, I’m beginning to see Americans complain that their being destroyed by external conquering and no domestic support by their government.

They must learn that for all actions, there will be reactions! They must see what they are doing to the rest of the world, otherwise, I sincerely will be waiting for the next major terrorist attack in there.

I think Global history, not just American history, should be required classes for all government officials. If they feel inept to maintain current, truthful knowledge involving global dictators and governing forces, they should be forced to have an unbiased intellect who can get the facts and regurgetate for them...Have they ever heard of internet or newspapers?

but seriously - a nice article. I think you’ll find that Cream were English... I like them too. ;)

America is a nation of great talent and potential, as you know - but it is and has been stumbling around in the dark like much of the rest of the world for such a long time; stumbling from one calamity to another. Think of the American-backed Shah of Iran and how tragically that ended (if not only for Iran but for American foreign policy in that region and self-evidently right up to the present day).

I think it may be salient to differentiate between two Americas here - not the North and the South - but the Conservative and the Liberal. I feel deeply that Conservative politics underlie the majority of imperialist/expansionist tendencies of North American governments and that to the degree to which the Liberals can escape the gravitational pull of Big Business and naked economic concerns - that Liberalism is a much brighter (and humanistic) star to follow. USA will one day wane, as all things must, and then will it’s foreign policy chickens (or rather - turkeys) truly come home to roost.

United States can really surprise me with this ability of doing bad things to other countries, destroying hopes and dreams as if others nations were in this world just to be used and exploited.

The damages they caused are too big and cannot be repaired in South America anymore, millions have died in vain in the name of their consumerism.
