Totally. What happens in Argentina is very sad. In the 80’s and 90’s, this country has become the major U.S. ally in the region. But paid a very dear price for it. Argentina has literally been ”raped” by rich countries and so far not been recovered.

Oh, but Argentina has the highest Human Development Index level and the second highest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita in purchasing power parity in Latin America.

Argentina’s GDP is the 31st largest in the world. It is currently classified as an Upper-Middle Income Country or as a secondary emerging market by the World Bank.

But it is a precarious time. In the hands of less than capable leaders, all these might just go to waste.

Remember the lessons of US-backed governments! The memory of the US-backed Pinochet regime in Chile is still a nightmare.

The big problem there was the Menem government, which privatized all state by the price of bananas. Argentina has already been the seventh richest country in the world, but now is undergoing for a very bad institutional crisis (even the vice president does not support the president). The economy is very fragile and Brazil has helped so that Argentina will not sink economically.

It was, too, for a while, the same case with the Philippines. But instead of bananas, it was coconut and sugar.

And, lo and behold, the Marcos regime in the Philippines (for 21 years) was also US-backed.
